Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel 2011

* Start with the color of this Zin-a powerful and deep red-black
* Black cherries and red currants with just the right amount of spiciness
* Acidity so balanced it could walk a tightrope

We get that some grapevines need to be replanted when they get geriatric. But not Zin.
Definitely not Zin. For this old-vine Zinfandel, we chose vineyards in San Joaquin County where warm days are punctuated by cool nights. The grapes stay dry, just what Zinfandel likes, but the roots have pushed deep to find water and nutrients, so the fruit is both juicy
and concentrated. The 2011 season in Lodi saw cool, even temperatures throughout the
growing season, with just enough extra warmth in September to push along ripening.
What that brought about were mature, textural tannins-the kind you expect from old vines. You’ll get taken over by aromas and flavors of black cherries, currants, clove, and cocoa, with soft, full tannins and balanced acidity for an achingly long and oh-so-pleasant finish. Unbelievable with lasagna, grilled pepper steak, or stew.
