Delas Cotes-du-Rhone 2011

The Saint-Esprits deep color has a dark plum like hue.  The nose is classical Syrah, with berry fruit, violet, licorice and spices. It has a full, rounded palate with delicate tannins. Saint-Esprit is a unique wine in the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation and can be paired with Provençale-style cuisine, game, stuffings and mixed grills.

The Côtes-du-Rhône Saint-Esprit is made from a blend of 90 percent Syrah and 10 percent Grenache grapes, which come from a small village in the Ardeche region. The vineyard southern exposure on steep granite hillsides provides the best growing conditions for the vines. Average production is 450,000 bottles per year.

Founded over 160 years ago, Delas Freres was acquired by Champagne Deutz in 1977. Delas Freres cultivates vineyards on the steep granite slopes of the northern Rhone, in some of the region’s most prestigious appellations. Additional grapes are supplied through long-term agreements with southern Rhone growers dedicated to providing only top quality grapes.

Chateau Fage Graves de Vayres 2013

The wine shows a pale gold with yellowish highlights. An initial sniff produces tree fruit peal, minerals and a touch of gunflint. The nose and palate work through a racy chorus of melon, citrus, and white peach, never leaving the minerality completely behind. The acidity is prominent and pleasant. With all the grapes coming from a small appellation on the edge of Pessac-Leognan, this is a strong yet surprisingly affordable example of traditional white Bordeaux, showing its terroir in all its glory.
Graves de Vayres is a small district in the Entre-Deux-Mers sub-region of Bordeaux. It also provides the name of the AOC Graves de Vayres appellation, which is applied to both red and white wines made in the area. It includes the communes of Arveyres and Vayres – an historic town located on a meandering section of the Dordogne river which is famous for its medieval castle.

Graves de Vayres is not directly related to either the Graves region to the south of Bordeaux city or the ‘Graves de Saint-Emilion’ area to the west of Saint-Emilion, but they do all share one key characteristic: the gravel (graves) soils which give them their names. The gravels of Vayres are an unusual find in the widespread clay soils of the Entre-Deux-Mers.

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world’s most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux’s wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity.
